British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
